I visited Laarbruch on Saturday, 16th May 2009, for a "trip down memory lane". I served at Laarbruch on 16 Squadron (Canberra B(I)8 from 1962 to 1965, then had a second tour from 1982-87, in the Armament Training Squadron, first on Bucaneer S2B, then Tornado GR1/3. Surprisingly, little has changed, but oh how I wish I could have driven around the "Ring Road" to really top off the visit. I found the airman's married quarters a little spooky, slowly being pegged back by nature.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed during my visit, but the web site looks very good, and it will grow with time and more exhibits

I served on 3 MFPS from the time it was detatched with 31 Squadron to Wildenrath in 1956,(where it was found that the old Luftwaffe hangars were too low for Canberra mk.9 tailfins). During its return to Laarbruch and until I was repatriated to RAF Wyton late 1958. Demobbed Oct '59 and worked at Westland Helicopters photographic dept. for the next 11 years. Then freelance 'til retirement aged 55. Now 71 and have very much enjoyed looking at the website and recalling our defence against the 'Red Menace' I also recall helping to clear the cut down trees that grew between the main runway and the taxiway. All this debris was thrown into a quarrey and later set on fire.
I also remember being amongst dozens of blokes clearing snow off the touchdown area when a Bruggen Canberra pretended to make an approach. The sight of all those men dropping their shovels and running must have been a sheer delight.

I have just taken a look at the photos that Sebastin from Germany took of the unit in June this year, it is sad to see the demise of the unit, but refreshing to see that the museum is attracting attention from people who have served at the unit in the 20th and 21st century's keep up the good work i hope to visit next year.

I left the unit a few months before it closed and retired from the RAF about 1 year later.
Regards to anyone who knows me and my family

I served at Laarbruch from 1957 - 60. A very happy time spent initially on 69 Sqdn. and then on 31 Sqdn. Although it was nearly 50 years ago it is still very fresh in my mind. One day it would be nice to re-visit.

Hi there,

I've been at your Museum last week for a short visit from my hometown Mannheim and have to say many thanks for the warm and friendly welcome, the fantastic exhibition and the nice tour with Steve Hill in his car around the base for pictures. I have uploaded some of my pictures to flickr, so if you like to see them, please feel free: http://flickr.com/photos/picture_ad dicted/collections/72157605590850493/

There are also some other base from the Belgian forces around Aachen, soon will come another set from Würselen. So just check again later.

Greetings, Sebastian
