I was on 1 Sqn. RAF Regiment 1981 - 1984........ A very happy time indeed!!! I also have a familly conection to Laarbruch, as my Uncle was the Catholic Chaplin!! He was Reverand Father Sqn Ldr Tony Leonard who was on the base from 1968 - 1975 I think however, I do know he had very happy memories of his time in RAF Germany. He passed away 11th Nov. 1991 PS a very good site that brings back very happy memories!!!

XV Squadron 1983 – 1986
Arrived at RAF Laarbruch with three other chaps to set up XVsqn Tornado GR1, must confess to placing a lot of “The Bucc stops here” zaps around the base. So many great memories. Watching the first Tornado land with lots of VAS running around in brand new white overalls ready to receive it. (But we had to do it as they had no headsets) Walking into the Regiment bar in singly strasse and asking for a pint………Big oops - a few bruises later we actually got our first Grolsch. The Xmas that I copped a duty and couldn’t go home, got chatting with some WAAFS and miraculously got approval to have a mixed party/meal in the WAAF block. The wonderful Spaghetti Bolognese and baths filled with cans and bottles of alcohol, cant remember what happened after the meal lol. Painting grass green on the Sqn for Prince Charles visit. (Who forgot to water the new grass?) The padre arranging my wedding bans on the station who accidentally forgot to get them posted and went on leave. Decided to drown my sorrows in the Mally bar and got totally drunk with a group of chaps who were visiting the station. Getting to the Sqn in the morning with a massive hangover, got called to the Wing commanders office……….”There is a Hercules leaving the base in 30mins to UK, the crew said you needed to get to your local parish to post your wedding bans” I thanked the crew in the traditional way – a crate of Grolsch. Getting married on the 22/09/1984 and bringing my wife back to a flat in Wasser Strasse in Weeze, only to be sent on a six week unaccompanied tour in Sardinia........................ The magic of Laarbruch changed my life.

My wife and I are going back to Laarbruch on 28th March 2012 ..in 2 weeks can't wait. We did go back about 8 years ago and had a bit of a walk around the married quarters. Mixed feelings as we had some really happy memories of when we were stationed there. Very sad to see the camp so empty. I lived at Laarbruch 1974 to 1976 when my dad was stationed there on EFDC (Ron Moss). 41 Portal Ave. Dad managed the cinema as a secondary duty so used to get in free most of the time. Used to play in the woods at the back of our house. I remember my brothers had this old motorbike which that they used to bomb around the woods on. What a great place to live as a kid..fantastic memeories. Joined the RAF myself and was posted to Laarbruch in 1987 where I worked (slept) on the SSA (SOT & POT duties Lol) counting the holes in the chain link fence!! Those were the days, not on the SSA but the social side of things..absolutely brilliant. Well done for putting this website together, it keeps the old place alive. Will get some pictures and upload when I get back.

A great initiative! Keep up the good work. I was based at Laarbruch 1983-86 on 16 Squadron, Tornado GR1. Flt Lt Rod Hawkins was tasked to look after me on the GR1. The picture shows us together on one of the early trips we had in 1983. I will come and visit sometime. My son Tom graduates today at RAF Cranwell as a pilot - on 16 Squadron. An excellent site and thank you - all Weeze volunteers - for making such a great effort. The following picture has been added to this guestbook entry: Bild |
