I was part of two university field trips organised by Anita. This lady is not just a professional tour guide but has actually been doing academic research on Sicilian culture! Her organisation of these week-long, complex tours was immaculate (I know what I am talking about, I am a part-time tour guide myself). Anita has a passion for Sicily and she loves meeting people and sharing her passion with them. We were based in Palermo, and our excursions took us across the different regions of Sicily, from Agrigento in the South-West to Catania in the East. While this was mostly a research trip – we interviewed people about the sweet, but sometimes troublesome life in Sicily – we also took in many of the sightseeing attractions on the West of the island. Anita served as our tour guide, and she did this fantastically. Not just because of her profound knowledge, her wealth of background information and the fascinating myths and stories from the mists of time. But also because we could always sense how Anita loved Sicily and how this had become her home, her passion, her centre of gravity. Dear Anita, thank you for sharing these fantastic moments, and I hope to see you again on this island of ancient myth and generous sunshine!
